UPSA Instº Pastoral, Madrid
Abstract: This article, after the notice of Benedict XVI about the current educational emergency, discusses two basic documents of the Magisterium of the Vatican Council II on education: the Declaration Gravissimum educationis (1965) and The Catholic School, still under the pontificate of Paul VI (1977). The author holds that the oscillations of the Magisterium and the pastoral confusions in education are due to a double tension, whose deepest root is conceptual: on the one hand, the true recipients of the educational service of the Church oscillate between the baptized and the needy (poor, orphaned and non-believers); and, on the other hand, such service oscillates between two human realities –with their respective concepts– which are different: instruction (school, basic and, in itself, secular) and education (family, community and relational), which exceeds the school environment and –in the case of the Church– refers to the baptized. The desired synthesis and convergence between these extremes stumbles on such socio-economic requirements, that some Catholic schools can be a counter witness.
