SUMMARY The Bull Rex pacificus enacting the Liber Extra of Gregory IX in 1234 tried to resolve uncertainties about the right at that particular juncture of the Latin Church. But its content went beyond this practical purpose and was the affirmation of a «legislative power» in the core of medieval Christianity, which seemed closely linked to an ecclesiology that justified the institutional skeleton built during the Middle Age. Present essay sets out the exegesis that has surrounded this basic text of the canonical corpus from the «ordinary gloss» of their official editio romana 1580-1582, highlighting the analysis criteria for the historical location of the various texts there printed. Nowadays, the desire to purify historical Church memory claims a better understanding of the canonical heritage and its lingering influences, in order to revise it at the ecumenical frame. The study shows the papal bull theological limitations and, by extension, the limits of the ius canonicum that was shaping since then.
