Maternidad sin riesgo. Ambigüedades éticas de la iniciativa. Safe Motherhood. Ethical ambiguities of the Initiative.
La Iniciativa «Maternidad sin riesgo» (Safe Motherhood Initiative) se ha dado a conocer en la última década del siglo xx. Constituye un esfuerzo global para reducir la mortalidad y la enfermedad, tanto maternal como infantil, especialmente en los países que se encuentran en vías de desarrollo. La Iniciativa Safe Motherhood fue lanzada en la Conferencia Internacional de Nairobi (1987) con el fin de mejorar la salud materna y tratar de reducir a la mitad la mortalidad materna para el año 2000. Este estudio del profesor J. R. Flecha recuerda algimas de las advertencias que esa Iniciativa ha recibido por parte de la Iglesia Católica y se detiene a analizar algunos puntos de su programa que resultan más conflictivos desde el punto de vista ético.

The Safe Motherhood Initiative was launched in the International Conference of Nairobi (1987), which sought to improve maternal health and reduce maternal mortality by half by the year 2000. This study by Professor J. R. Flecha highiights some of the counseis the Initiative has received from the Catholic Church, and analyses some of the more conflictive aspects of the programme from an ethical point of view.
