Pero a pesar de estos cambios la figura paterna sigue siendo fundamental para una sana estructuración del aparato mental de los hijos. En este artículo pretendo exponer cuales son estos nuevos roles y las formas distintas de vivir la paternidad que pueden coexistir en nuestros días, así como el impacto que pueden sufrir los hijos ante la ausencia del padre. En pleno siglo XXI existen unas características comunes y éstas son el ejercer funciones emocionales introyectivas que fomenten el crecimiento de los hijos. Summary The function of the father in the 21st Century The model of the family has changed and therefore the functions that the father exercises are not the same as they were 50 years ago. However, in spite of these changes, the father-figure continues to be a fundamental factor in a healthy structuring of the mental well-being of children. In this article I shall attempt to explain these new roles and the distinct life-models of paternity, which can exist at this point in time, as well as the way the situation of an absent father affects the children. We are fully aware in the 21st Century that some common characteristics exist, and these introspective emotional factors play a role in shaping the growth of the children. 7
