Palabras claves : exégesis me dieval, contemplación, hermenéutica, metafísica, Matthew Levering, Tomás de Aquino Abstract: The purpose of the article is to answer to substantive issues raised by the study of medieval exegesis in our times which are called by many contemporary thinkers as “post-metaphysical”. Very helpful in this response can be the biblical hermeneutics of Aquinas. Our task will be to analyze the role of metaphysics in exegetical practice of Aquinas and why he employed a philosophy in his reading of the Bible. Following the contribution of M. Levering, and based on the biblical commentaries of Aquinas, three main functions of metaphysics in Thomistic exegetical work are considered: first, metaphysics is an antidote to so called ‘conceptual idolatry’; second, is a contemplation which offers a profound knowledge and finally is a wisdom – all of this are necessary to cultivate Christian exegesis. Keywords: medieval exegesis, contemplation, hermeneutics, metaphysics, Matthew Levering, Thomas Aquinas
